Loisy, Alfred

Loisy, Alfred
(1857-1940)
   biblical scholar
Born in Ambrières, Marne, Alfred Loisy, who was ordained a Catholic priest (1879), was professor of Hebrew, then of Holy Scripture, at the Catholic institute of Paris. He founded the revue L'Enseignement biblique and wrote Histoire critique du texte des versions de l'Ancien Testament (1892) but had to resign from his chair in 1893. The publication of L'Évangile el l'Église (1902), in which he tried to place Christian dogmas within a historical perspective, placed him in the forefront of the Modernist crisis. Modernism, considered revisionist, was a viewpoint condemned by Pope Pius x. Loisy's writings were placed on the index of books prohibited by the Catholic Church and he was himself excommunicated in 1908. Becoming professor of History at the collège de france (1909-33), he undertook the study of a "religion of humanity" and published numerous other works, including La Morale humaine (1923) and Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire religieuse de notre temps (1930-31).
